For over 30 years Chicago Humanities has hosted compelling conversations, engaging events, and powerful performances with some of the leading authors, artists, scholars, policymakers, and thought leaders of our time. Chicago Humanities has established itself as a vital member of Chicago’s cultural community with a core belief that the arts and humanities play a fundamental role in understanding and addressing the pressing civic, social, and cultural issues of our time. In other words, individuals at the forefront of their fields sharing new insights into our human condition. We present thoughtfully curated festivals (Fall and Spring) in the Loop and neighborhoods across Chicago (from the South Shore to Pilsen, Bronzeville to Hyde Park, Old Town to Evanston), partnering with dozens of longstanding and evolving partnerships with cultural, educational, and civic organizations (local and national).

THE OPPORTUNITY
Chicago Humanities seeks an experienced and congenial Accountant with strong bookkeeping skills to manage its day-to-day accounting, financial systems, and records. The Accountant will be responsible for day to day bookkeeping including computing, classifying, calculating and posting Chicago Humanities’ financial transactions, paying bills and managing accounts payable, management of receivables, oversight of credit card usage, coordination with the Development staff and maintenance of the general ledger system. This person will work closely with the Director of Finance, to prepare timely, accurate, and useful financial statements and reports.

This position services the entire organization so confidentiality, excellent organizational skills, accuracy, timeliness and attention to detail are vital qualifications for the position. The ideal candidate is friendly, collaborative and able to communicate patiently and clearly with management and staff members. A commitment to reliability and consistently meeting weekly and monthly deadlines is essential.

Candidates should have an understanding of QuickBooks Online, or similar systems, and knowledge of non-profit accounting is
preferred.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
● Full charge bookkeeping including entering the majority of the day to day transactions, and maintaining the accounting system.
● Manage accounts payable and coordinate with Chicago Humanities’ staff to pay vendors and track expenses.
● Manage and account for pledges and other receivables and coordinate with Development staff to reconcile activity with the
donor database.
● Organization, review and maintenance of all supporting documentation and records.
● Monitoring the bank activity including responding to time sensitive requests like positive pay notices.
● Prepare month-end reconciliation and closing entries.
● Reviewing procedures to ensure compliance and eliminating inefficiencies, and assistance to staff and management on a daily
basis.
● Assist the Director of Finance to prepare monthly financial statements, grant reports and year end reporting.
● Assist with the development of the annual budget.
● Assist with development of project budgets, grant proposals and reports.
● Assist with annual audit preparation.
● Comply with federal, state and local SAFS Rules (Statement of Financial Accounting Standards) by studying and enforcing adherence to policies and procedures; filing reports and advising management on needed actions, preparation of forms 1099.

COMPENSATION
This is a full-time position with a salary of $55,000-$60,000 based on responsibilities, qualifications, and experience. Benefits include fully-covered health insurance (with an option to upgrade), dental, vision, 403(b) with 7% employer match, equitable parental leave, tax-free commuter spending plan, life insurance, short and long-term disability, and 17 days of accrued paid time off. In addition, we offset busy seasons with additional office closures during the summer and a communal winter break (December 25 through New Year’s Day). Chicago Humanities observes ten holidays, provides one floating holiday, and one day of Volunteer Time Off.

WORK LOCATION
Chicago Humanities maintains a collaborative and congenial environment. We work in a hybrid model, currently requiring Tuesdays and Thursdays in person at our River North office while Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays allow the option to work remotely, exceptions might occur based on organizational and/or departmental needs. While working remotely, you will have access to a
laptop computer and a $50 per month stipend to offset home internet and personal phone expenses. All full time positions at Chicago Humanities may require additional night and weekend hours to support aspects of our in person events that take place across the city.
