What is Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV)?
International Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV) takes place on March 31st annually and around the world. TDOV is a relatively recent holiday that began in 2009 in response to a lack for LGBT holidays centering transgender and gender non-conforming individuals. TDOV is an important day to celebrate and increase visibility around the lives and integrity of transgender and gender non-conforming people. Juxtaposed to International Trans Day of Remembrance (TDOR), TDOV aims to separate from the culturally embedded association with loss, grief, and trauma that marks transgender and gender non-conforming peoples’ histories and make space for the joy, freedom, and self-determination that is also inherent within transgender and gender non-conforming individuals’ lives and histories.
